A busy moment: one clerk is on a ×30 combo, other players' clerks stand by the door, and the AI is explaining your anger back to you in five bullet points.
2026 is the year the AI took a desk in every office. It writes the meeting notes, replies-all to every thread and summarises emails nobody asked it to summarise. A lot of people have feelings about that.
So I built a place to put those feelings: Fire The AI, a free browser game with exactly one control. There is a big red FIRE! button. Everyone on Earth presses the same one. When the world has pressed it enough times, an AI packs its things into a cardboard box and walks out the door.
That's the whole game. It takes three seconds to understand and, as it turns out, a lot longer to stop.
What is Fire The AI?
Fire The AI is a realtime, worldwide one-button game, in the spirit of Popcat and the old "press the button" toys, with an office comedy on top:
- You are an HR clerk. Each player gets a small chibi character with a name tag (a random name like Polite Barista 5783, which you can change).
- The AI is the employee. One AI is on the chopping block at a time: the Meeting Bot, the Reply-All Bot, the No-Sleep Bot, the TL;DR Bot and more, each with its own look and its own excuses.
- The world shares one case file. Every press from every country fills the same bar. When it is full, the AI is fired, and the country that pressed hardest signs the termination letter.
- Then the next AI walks in, and it is a little harder to get rid of than the last one.
No accounts, no ads in the game, no payments and no personal data. You open the page and press.
How to play
- Go to firetheai.com. The game picks your language and country from your browser.
- Press FIRE! On a phone, it is right under your thumb on the first screen.
- Watch the robot. It wobbles, changes its excuse and starts to look worse for wear: a bandage first, then a crack.
- Keep pressing to build a combo, and your clerk starts throwing balls of paper at it.
- When the bar fills, the verdict lands: FIRED!, with the name of the country that signed it.

AI #7, the No-Sleep Bot, leaves with its box. The bar at the bottom is already counting down the next one.
You are never pressing alone
The first version had one robot and one button, and playing it felt like pressing a button alone in an empty room. So the room is full now:
- Other players appear live. The clerks of people pressing right now stand in the office with their name and flag over their head, and you can see their paper balls fly.
- Watchers count too. People who are just looking show up near the door, so even a quiet minute feels like a crowd.
- Country leaderboards. Every press counts for your country, and the leader is the one who signs. In Vietnam, there is also a board by province.
- Promotions. Press enough and your clerk climbs from Passer-by to Strict manager and on to Cold-hearted HR.
- A card to show off. "Show it off" makes an image of your clerk, your count and a battered robot, ready for a story or a group chat.

Ten languages, one button
The game speaks English, Tiếng Việt, Español, Português, Français, Deutsch, Bahasa Indonesia, 日本語, 한국어 and 中文. Everything is translated, including the AIs' excuses and the names of the bosses, and every language has its own link so you can send a friend the right one:
- English: firetheai.com/?lang=en
- Tiếng Việt: firetheai.com/?lang=vi
- Español: firetheai.com/?lang=es
- 日本語: firetheai.com/?lang=ja
A joke about the AI, never about people
One rule shaped every line of text in the game: the AI is the butt of the joke, never the people who lost work. The robot says things like "I summed up your life in three bullet points. Two have typos." Nobody in the game is unemployed except the bots, and no real company or real product is named.
Names are shown to strangers, so the game also refuses offensive nicknames in all ten languages, including the usual tricks with spaces, dots and numbers in place of letters.
How it's built (for the developers)
This blog is mostly about building things, so here is the short version of the stack:
- Cloudflare Workers serve the page and the static assets. The Worker rewrites the title, description and
hreflangtags for each?lang=so every language gets its own indexable page. - Durable Objects hold the realtime state. Room objects keep the WebSockets of the players near them; one global counter object owns the world total, the current boss and its health, the country boards and the crowd of visible clerks.
- Batching everywhere. Presses are counted locally and flushed in batches, and the crowd each room reports is capped (the top pressers plus a few watchers), so a busy minute costs about the same as a quiet one.
- The difficulty curve: each AI needs about 18% more presses than the one before, with a ceiling, so early bosses fall in seconds and later ones need the whole world.
- Plain ES modules, no framework. The robot and the clerks are hand-drawn SVG generated in code, and each player's look comes from a hash of their nickname, so it needs no storage at all.
- Cloudflare Turnstile keeps bots from pressing the button for people. Ironic, I know.
FAQ
Is Fire The AI free?
Yes. It is free to play in any browser, on a phone or a computer. There is nothing to buy and no account to create.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. Open firetheai.com and press the button. The game gives you a random name, which you can change, and you can move your progress to another device with a QR code.
Is it multiplayer?
Yes, everyone in the world plays the same game at the same time. Every press counts toward the same AI, and you can see other players' clerks in the office in real time.
Which country is winning?
The leaderboard on the site shows it live. The country with the most presses on the current AI is the one that signs its termination letter.
Is this anti-AI?
It's a joke, and the AI is in on it. I build with AI tools every day. Fire The AI is a place to laugh at the mildly annoying parts (the summaries nobody asked for, the reply-all) and press a very satisfying button.
Go fire one
That's it. One button, the whole planet, one AI at a time. Your country needs you:

If it made you laugh, send it to the group chat that complains about AI the most. And if you have an idea for the next AI to fire, I'd love to hear it.
